Hi Friend,

I hope you've been enjoying "Tea with Julie" emails. I love sending them and getting your feedback (just click "reply" to this message if you want to suggest a topic or share a comment with me).

We're heading into a new topic for the next three weeks: Revision!

Naturally we want our young writers to learn how to improve their drafts, to care about putting in the effort to make corrections without dissolving into a puddle of tears. Revision, like no other aspect of the writing process, however, often leads to meltdowns and profound resistance.

Does it have to be that way?

I'm here to say emphatically: It doesn't!

  • Revision can be as enjoyable as learning to make soup stock from scratch.
  • It can be as creative as designing a new pattern for a quilt project.
  • It can be as pride-inducing as polishing your form for a gymnastics meet.

Revision is not about accuracy nearly as much as it is about creativity, play, and polish. Kids who get hold of the vision of revision (ha!) find it pleasurable. In fact, my favorite part of writing is revision. The words are on the page waiting to be rearranged and expanded. No more dredging up the raw writing from the depths.

So in the next few weeks, I'll give you practical steps to take as well as the manner in which you guide revision in your home. You'll learn how to deliver the writing feedback that leads to a happier revision process.

We'll look at these topics:

  • Revision: It's Not Editing
  • Giving Feedback
  • Creating a New Lens for Revision

Lucky you: we also have a brand new online class dedicated to teaching your kids to play with revision first. It's a game-changer. If you're interested, check it out and sign up for one of our spring sessions (registration opens on December 7).

Warmly,
